Cozumel, Q.R. — An adult loggerhead sea turtle that was found deceased on a Cozumel beach is said to have likely died from exhaustion.
The death of the sea turtle was tended to by personnel of ecology and elements of the municipal police after the report of the dead turtle in the area of San Martin beach. Upon inspection, authorities noticed the turtle was missing its left rear flipper and concluded that it likely died from exhaustion.
Sandra Dutton Ruiz, director of Municipal Department of Ecology and Environment, said the turtle was discovered by a group of tourists and had shown signs of having laid eggs on the beach prior to her death. She added that not having a flipper could have complicated her return to the sea, and thus, caused her death due to exhaustion.
The turtle was 1.06 meters wide and approximately 165 kilos.
