Scavengers likely to blame for large Isla Mujeres tire fire

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A fire that is believed intentionally set became out of control near the Isla Mujeres landfill Tuesday. Cancun firemen attended to the report of a tire fire after nearby residents reported billowing thick black smoke from a green area.

Firemen were at the 12:30 p.m. scene on mainland Isla Mujeres where they began to deal with the quickly spreading flames. The fire was reported near Rancho Viejo Avenue, which borders with the city of Cancun.

The fire is believed to have been started by scavengers who burn the tires to extract the metal inside. Given the ongoing dry and windy conditions, the fire quickly became out of control and spread into the surrounding vegetation.
