Riviera Maya, Q.R. — More than 2,800 vacation rental units have been registered with the Quintana Roo Tax Administration Service (SATQ). The Director of the agency, Héctor Contreras Mercader, says it is an increase of 200 percent compared to last year.

“We are doing well. People are registering, so much so that in one year we have increased the number of platform user registrations by 200 percent. We are working hand in hand with them step by step, supporting them so that they can register,” he said.

While the registration figures show an significant increase over last year, it is still only around half of the known units. The Vacation Rental Association reports around 43,000 units in the state of Quintana Roo.

According to SATQ regulations, all hosts must have an operating license to continue renting and comply with tax obligations. Data from the Center for Tourism Research and Competitiveness (Cicotur) indicate that digital platforms in Quintana Roo generate annual profits of close to $400 million USD.
