Early information says the driver of the private vehicle was heading south when she lost control on the wet highway and drove over the median into oncoming traffic. A taxi from the municipality of Tulum was heading north when it crashed nearly head-on into the car that suddenly invaded its lane.

Passing motorists stopped to help the driver of the private car who was found trapped behind the wheel while her vehicle began to emit smoke. She was eventually pulled free from the car.

Emergency services arrived at the scene, locating both vehicles on the highway approximately five kilometers north of Xpu-Ha.

The taxi driver, who was traveling toward Playa del Carmen at the time of the collision, was transferred to PDC hospital by ambulance with undisclosed injuries. A second ambulance transferred the female driver of the private vehicle to hospital.

Highway traffic was slowed by blocked lanes due to the collision. National Guard Highways Division flagged the area while the damaged vehicles were removed from the Riviera Maya highway.
