Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A pedestrian was killed in a Riviera Maya highway pedestrian accident Wednesday morning. The unidentified pedestrian was crossing the highway heading west near Punta Venado, approximately 18 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, when they were struck by a van.

The impact from the van threw the pedestrian into the oncoming lane where they were run over by a second vehicle. Police were at the scene of the Riviera Maya highway accident shortly after 7:30 a.m.
Both drivers involved in the accident stopped at the scene. The van, who first hit the pedestrian, was heading south when he came upon the pedestrian running across the highway. The driver of the second vehicle involved ended up leaving the road and coming to a stop in highway vegetation.

Civil Protection paramedics confirmed the death of the pedestrian. National Guard Highways cordoned off the area while both drivers were interviewed and the vehicles towed. The deceased has not been named.
