Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A Riviera Maya hotel has requested permission for an extensive renovation that will over 114 hectares. The Belmond Maroma hotel, north of Playa del Carmen, has applied for a permit to extend its property.
The MIA has been put to public consult by Semarnat until May 6. The official request for the renovation was made in November. If approved, the hotel will spend around $8 million USD.
According to the Ecological Gazette of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the promoter, Plan Costa Maya, intends to expand hotel facilities in the 114 hectare property from its current 500 rooms.
“The Maroma hotel expansion project, Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya consists of the construction and operation of new hotel tourism equipment works related to the improvement of the Maroma hotel’s operational work” (sic), says the MIA.
“It intends to take advantage of forest land for tourist use for the construction and operation of hotel tourist equipment projects aimed at improving the operational work of the Maroma Hotel, Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya, the foregoing in accordance with the land uses and limit of acceptable change allowed in the environmental and urban planning instruments applicable to the region in which the property is inserted” (sic), adds the technical document.
On their website, the hotel has posted “We look forward to showing you a new vision of beachside bliss and Mayan magic on 25 May, 2023.”
