Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Head of State Public Security for the state says that a permanent operation to eradicate extortion has been set up for businesses in Playa del Carmen.
Alberto Capella Ibarra made the announcement Friday in response to the difficult situation faced by Playa del Carmen businessmen who are too often approached for floor rights and threatened with various forms of extortion.
“Today, we began a permanent presence and investigation operation that allows us to resolve once and for all, this issue that has affected the Solidaridad business sector for years,” he said.
The police chief called on Playa del Carmen businessmen to provide information that facilitates the fight against extortion, which he adds, will be anonymous and fundamental to the operation’s success adding that the support of businessmen “is essential”.
“We are going to work together in this permanent process to solve the issue of extortion that causes so much damage, to recover together the tranquility and peace that these criminals want to steal from us,” the police chief added.
The seriousness of the problem, which mainly affects the municipalities of the northern zone, has also motivated the State Attorney General’s Office to create a Special Prosecutor’s Office to address the problem.
The announcement by Capella came just a week after Cámara Nacional de la Industria de Restaurantes y Alimentos Condimentados (Canirac) confimred that 70 percent of its members have had to deal with some type of extortion.
