Police return fire during Puerto Morelos incident capturing involved gang members

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Two youths captured in Puerto Morelos on drug offences are now also facing firearm and attempted murder charges. On Thursday, authorities said Miguel Ángel “N” and Benancio “N” are suspected criminal gang members involved in more than just area drug sales.

Both men were arrested Thursday afternoon from the federal highway in Puerto Morelos after an altercation with officers. Police said while conducting an investigation along the highway, their vehicle was fired at by three men inside the car.

All three youths were armed. Officers returned fire.

Once the car stopped along the highway, all three made a run for it. Two of the involved gang members were captured, however, one of them headed for the jungle while continuing to shoot at police.

Police chased him while shooting back resulting in one of the officers being hit by a bullet in the leg. He was taken to hospital for a non-life-threatening injury.

The two captured youths were taken into custody and are facing charges that include drug dealing, illegal firearm possession and attempted murder.

The incident happened “when the officers were conducting investigative acts on the Cancun-Playa del Carmen federal highway and observed three subjects who, upon noticing the proximity of the official vehicle, fired their weapons at the police officers, who returned fire,” police reported.

“Shortly afterwards, agents managed to capture two subjects while a third entered the undergrowth and continued shooting, so he was pursued by police, resulting in one of them being injured in the leg; he was taken to a hospital where his health condition is reported as stable.”

The State Attorney General (FGE) reported that the two men in custody are facing charges “possibly constituting the crimes of drug dealing, possession of a firearm for the exclusive use of the Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as for attempted homicide in this municipality.

“The detainees are identified as Miguel Ángel “N” and Benancio “N”, from whom a .223 caliber long gun, a .38 caliber special revolver, magazines and live cartridges, as well as alleged narcotics, were seized.”
