Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — At least one person has been reported killed in a Sunday crash along a section of Puerto Morelos highway. A Playa del Carmen taxi driver has been reported as the deceased.

The PDC taxi and a private SUV collided Sunday afternoon on the federal highway heading toward the city of Cancun. The two vehicles ended up off the highway and in roadside vegetation.
According to early information, the Playa del Carmen taxi was broadsided on the passenger’s side. It is not clear if the cab was hit by the SUV. There are reports of a possible second death after someone from inside the taxi was ejected during the accident.
National Guard highways were first on scene. Emergency personnel who responded to the Sunday afternoon accident have not yet released any information.

The accident happened early Sunday afternoon approximately 30 kilometers from the city of Cancun in the municipality of Puerto Morelos. The taxi was heading toward Cancun at the time of the collision. The deceased driver has not been named.

Traffic was backed up for kilometers while emergency services cleared the way. An official cause for the fatal crash is not known.
