Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An attempt to privatize a public park backfired Sunday after local residents protested. A group of heated locals demonstrated against the attempted privatization of the Xaman Ha park inside residential Ciudad Mayakoba in northwest Playa del Carmen.
As people arrived, guards inside the security house were requesting identification to be able to enter what is supposed to be a public park.
Solidaridad Councilor Marciano Toledo Sánchez of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Commission arrived to remove the cones used to prevent public passage.
Toledo Sánchez said the 10 hectares that make up part of the park were part of the legally mandatory donations of the Ciudad Mayakob developer.
He also said that the Municipality of Solidaridad invested 22.9 million pesos in infrastructure of the Xaman Ha park.
“We have asked that the road be clear since they are in a municipal area with private guards who have no authority,” he said adding that the surveillance of that area is under the Municipal Police.
After the intervention of Councilor Toledo Sánchez, public access to the park was restored.
