Playa del Carmen officer being investigated for unprovoked pepper spray use on citizens

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A Solidaridad police officer who sprayed two men in the face with pepper spray is facing an investigation. On Friday, video began circulating on social media of the Thursday night incident where the lone officer, for no apparent reason, sprayed the men in the face.

After the video went viral, Seguridad Pública Solidaridad (SSP) of Solidaridad posted an update after reviewing the video and identifying the officer.

“Derived from the action registered last night (Thursday) where an element sprayed two citizens with pepper spray, those involved in the event are invited to go and file their formal complaint with the Internal Affairs Department.

“At the Secretariat of Public Security and Municipal Transit of Solidaridad, we work to serve and protect society and acts outside of the regulations and police function are not tolerated. Your formal complaint is very important to carry out the proper investigation and apply the corresponding sanctions.”

On Thursday night, two men identified as Antonio ‘N’ and Mike ‘N’, had stopped to assist a person they said was a tourist who was stopped by the officer for going the wrong way on a one-way street in centro.

In doing so, the officer who had stopped the tourist walked over to the two men who were standing behind a wire fence, and sprayed them. The incident was caught on video which has since been viewed by Playa del Carmen authorities.
