Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Firefighters extinguished a burning vehicle that was reported on fire along the federal highway Sunday. The male driver of the trailer escaped without injury.
Felipe Carrillo Puerto firemen had their work cut out for them while putting out a tar fire from an overturned industrial unit. A semi carrying a load of tar caught fire early Sunday evening after overturning along the federal highway.
The accident was reported along a section of road between Tres Rios and Chumpón near the Chumpón town intersection. The driver of the semi managed to escape before the flames consumed the unit.
The accident, which was reported by citizens just before 5:00 p.m., had elements of the fire department rushing to the scene. National Guard Highways Division were also sent. Traffic was backed up for kilometers while firemen worked to put out the stubborn fire.
After declaring the fire out, firefighters confirmed that the driver had evacuated the vehicle in time. His semi was completely consumed by flames. A tow truck was called to remove the charred, overturned vehicle that was left blocking a lane of the federal highway.
Authorities continue to investigate an official cause for the single vehicle accident, however, reports say the driver simply lost control and swerved off the road, overturning his truck.
