Mexico City, Mexico — More than 33,000 new cases of covid-19 were registered in a 24-hour period across the country. Mexican health officials reported 33,626 new cases in one day, the highest new daily count since the start of the pandemic.
The January 11 figures surpassed the previous highest daily count of 30,671 on January 9.
The increase in cases is due to a rebound that could lead to a fourth wave across the country. Health authorities have recorded over 4.1 million cases of the viral disease with 300,574 resulting in covid-19-related deaths.
There are more than 184,660 active cases in the country, with active cases representing people who tested positive for, and had symptoms of, covid-19 in the last 14 days.
