Cancun, Q.R. — A man who presented a handwritten phone number to a business manager has been charged with aggravated extortion. Gerardo Alberto “N” will be tried for his participation in the extortion of a Cancun business.
The charge is related to the October 2020 extortion attempt of a Cancun merchant where, according to the FGE, Gerardo Alberto “N” presented a handwritten note with a phone number.
“The events of which he is accused occurred in Cancun in October 2020, when in the company of another subject, Gerardo Alberto “N” arrived at the premises where they handed a paper to the manager and told him that he should dial the number that appeared on the paper for the payment of floor rights,” the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reported in a statement.
“When the person in charge of the business called the indicated number, they told him that he had to pay and if he did not do so, they would attack the place with bullets. By ignoring these instructions, on November 17, 2020, they shot up the outside of the establishment,” the report detailed.
A Cancun judge has ordered Gerardo Alberto “N” to stand trial for the crime of aggravated extortion in addition to decreeing the precautionary measure of informal preventive detention for a period of two years.
