Cozumel, Q.R. — An elderly couple on the island of Cozumel will be getting a new house this year. The unidentified couple are long time residents of the island. And due to their limited financial resources, were eligible for the new house.
The house they will receive will be one of Omar Vázquez Sánchez’s sargassum houses. Their house, which will be donated in its entirety, will cost around 250,000 peso or approximately $12,500 USD to build. Once complete, it will be the first sargassum house on the island.
The home is being constructed by Vázquez Sánchez’s company BlueGreen. It is part of a joint project that includes several other island organizations who have been organizing events to raise the money needed to help pay for the house.
Paola Torrealba, Vice President of 4C, one of the involved organizations, stressed the importance of social projects of this type. She also mentioned Omar Vázquez’s willingness to donate the 2,250 saragassum blocks needed to build the modest 6 x 8 meters home.
Construction of the home could begin sometime in September. Once started, crews will only need around four weeks to build the house.
