Isla Mujeres working on restoring Blue Flag status

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The new administration of Isla Mujeres says they are working on restoring the islands main beach areas to again, be able to raise their Blue Flag.

Fidel García Coral, director of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) for the municipality, explained that the mayor’s indication has been clear since the beginning of the new administration, which is to keep the beaches in optimal condition for locals and visitors.

“We are already working. The mayor’s instructions were clear, to keep beaches clean, to keep the beaches orderly, although in recent days, we have had sargassum, but it has been atypical and has been taken care of,” he commented.

Garcia Coral pointed out that the administration will continue to work to clean the beaches so the corresponding procedures can be carried out so Isla Mujeres will be able to wave the blue flag again, acknowledging that one of the main attractions of Isla Mujeres are its beaches.

He said that both Playa Centro and Playa Norte meet the Blue Flag requirements, which means the beaches can be certified and the flags, raised again.

“We meet the requirements. We have beaches with all the requirements to be part of the Blue Flag, however, the past administration did not make the corresponding payments. It was due to lack of payment that the blue flag was not raised,” he commented.
