Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A dozing taxi driver was jolted awake Tuesday after driving part way into an Isla Mujeres marina. The unidentified island driver allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel of his cab and woke up beside the marina’s palapa.
The accident was reported to authorities by passing motorists around 7:00 a.m. At the scene, police learned that the taxi had mowed down a parked motorcycle and part of a navy fence before coming to a stop.
According to reports, the driver of the taxi climbed a sidewalk in the Miraflores neighborhood after falling asleep at the wheel. The taxi driver was assessed for a few bumps and bruises.
A tow truck eventually arrived to remove the car from its lodged position part way under the marina palapa. Island police did not comment on possible charges or damage to either public or private property.
