Illegal mototaxi group removed from Cozumel streets

Cozumel, Q.R. — Cozumel authorities have removed seven mototaxis from the island after they were found without permits. On Tuesday afternoon, the units were loaded onto the back of a flatbed and transferred to the mainland of Playa del Carmen.

The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) and the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) headed the removal operation amidst protests from the mototaxi owners. The group of owners attempted to block the tow truck from heading to the ferry terminal to relocate the units.

The seven units were deemed illegal, circulating island streets without the necessary permits. Local reports say that the seven-units intended to start their own group.

Mototaxi conflict between the existing groups of Cozumel has been ongoing on the island due to the large number of units. The seven towed Tuesday had been on the island for only a few days when they were reported and subsequently towed.
