Hundreds take in first New Year sunrise at southern tip of Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Hundreds took in the first sunrise of the New Year on Isla Mujeres Wednesday. Locals began to arrive at the Punta Sur Sculpture Park before daybreak.

The annual tradition is practiced around the state from various beaches where people gather to take in the first sunrise of the year. Hundreds of people were reported gathered at Punta Sur on the southern tip of the island early Wednesday morning where many arrived before 5:30 a.m.

Island police were also at the point to ensure there were no problems. A checkpoint was set up at each of the two entrances by Municipal Transit. For security purposes, authoriteis prohibited access to the Sculpture Park where the temple of the goddess Ixchel and other Mayan monuments are located.

Public Security and Transit monitored traffic, controlling vehicular access and registering parking on the side of the road from the Garrafón Park viewpoint.

Some spectators also participated in an open-air mass near Punta Sur , a spiritual event that has been held for the last 10 years.
