Foestur to replace dissolved Fonatur in Cancun and Cozumel

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Before the end of June, a new organization to replace the National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur) will be created. State Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto says a Fonatur replacement for Cancun Hotel Zone and Cozumel Marina maintenance will be ready by mid-summer.

The new organization to replace the now defunct government agency Fonatur (Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo) will likely be titled the State Fund for Tourism Promotion (Foestur).

He says Foestur (Fondo Estatal de Fomento al Turismo (Foestur)), tentatively named for now, will implement more transparent and effective management.

“It will have a trust that will include representatives of the private sector who will contribute funds from the lodging tax for various improvements in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

“One of the main challenges is the continuation of pending Fonatur projects such as the 2021-2023 Maintenance Program, which covers infrastructure and urbanization projects as well as improvements in the Cozumel Marina.

“Fonatur left unfinished strategies to improve mobility in the Cancun Hotel Zone, derived from a study carried out in 2022 at a cost of 3.7 million pesos,” he said.

Fonatur is expected to be replaced with a new similar agency sometime next month after being dissolved by the federal government late last year.

In February, Cueto announced that work was underway to create a state-run trust to will operate and maintain the Cancun Hotel Zone and Cozumel Marina.
