Trust will replace Fonatur for Cancun Hotel Zone operations

Cancun, Q.R. — Maintenance for the Cancun Hotel Zone will be through a trust of the State Government. The trust is being set up after the dissolution of Fonatur (Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo).

Bernardo Cueto, head of the State Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), said that work is already underway to create the trust that will operate and maintain the Cancun Hotel Zone.

He says in the meantime, the state government is taking charge of the maintenance and care previously provided by Fonatur. Cueto said the operation of the Cancun Hotel Zone is currently in the hands of the state government with assigned resources while the trust is being created.

“Little by little, improvements will come to the hotel zone because there is a great commitment from Governor Mara Lezama to establish better infrastructure, better maintenance and better operation of the Cancun Hotel Zone which is a very important destination,” he said.

The entire process, which began in early January, will take several months to complete.

At the start of the year, Fonatur began the handing-over process to the state of Quintana Roo. In January, Fonatur transferred management of the Cancun Hotel Zone and the Cozumel Marina to the state government. Three other agreements regarding state tourism infrastructure were also signed.
