Federal health officials warn of illegal rapid covid test

Cancun, Q.R. — Federal health officials are warning consumers about the illegal marketing of AxiumHealth ™, an alleged rapid covid test. The federal health agency says that the product “has not demonstrated its specificity and sensitivity before this health authority, so it does not have authorization to be marketed in the national territory,” making its marketing practice in Mexico illegal.

Manufacturers of the product claim it as an antibody or serology test to determine igg (immunoglobulin G) and igm (immunoglobulin M) for COVID-19. “Authorized serological tests have demonstrated their specificity and sensitivity to this health authority, which is why they are the only ones that to date, can be marketed in the country,” Cofepris wrote in a statement.

The Comisión Federal para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios (Cofepris) says it is important to consider that the use of these tests is to identify antibodies and for that reason, are not recommended to confirm the presence of the virus.

“The use of unauthorized serological tests represents a health risk, since inaccurate interpretation of the results can lead to wrong decisions regarding the presence of antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus,” the agency explained.
