Elderly Cozumel man found dead in cell after arrest

Cozumel, Q.R. — An elderly man arrested Tuesday for an administrative offence has died while in Cozumel police custody. The 63-year-old man was arrested for sleeping on a public street the day before he was found dead in a Cozumel jail cell.

He was taken into custody from 40th Avenue and 12th Street and transferred to a cell inside the Public Security building where he spent the night. He was found dead in his cell Wednesday.

In a statement, the Directorate of Public Security and Transit reported the now-deceased man, identified by his initials as M.C.V., was found unresponsive by a guard. According to the statement, the guard made the discovery as he passed the cell to deliver a tray of food.

When the man failed to respond, the guard checked the man for vital signs, finding him dead.

According to the statement, the State Attorney General’s Office has begun an investigation into the death.
