Divers collect more than 76 kilos of garbage off Xpu-Ha beach

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A group of local divers participated in a seabed cleanup off the coast of Xpu-Ha. Over the weekend, the group met as part of Playa del Carmen’s Sustainable Environment and Climate Change and Zofemat.

They reported removing 76.8 kilos of garbage from the water off the beach. Items found ranged from plastic spray bottle heads and glass bottles to aluminum and discarded marine rope. The cleanup was organized by the Playa del Carmen City Council.

In a report, the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change and Zofemat said “we carried out a seabed cleanup in Xpu-ha, where we collected 76.8 kg of general waste, 7.3 kg of iron, 0.2 kg of glass, and 0.1 kg of aluminum.

“This activity highlights the commitment and importance that our president, Estefanía Mercado, places on keeping our oceans clean and free of pollution, which is essential for the conservation and protection of our ecosystems. Everyone’s collaboration is crucial to the success of this activity.”
