Civil Protection investigating second Cozumel hotel pool drowning

Cozumel, Q.R. — Cozumel Civil Protection carried out an inspection of an island hotel after a second pool drowning. On Sunday, a 9 year old boy died in hospital after drowning inside the hotel pool.

His drowning death was the second since May of this year. Cozumel Civil Protection Director Alfredo Arellano Villaseñor said they would be investigating the hotel Monday morning after the Sunday incident.

“Civil Protection will carry out an inspection of the premises to see its security measures, if it has the approval of Civil Protection, and if not, it will be closed,” he said.

Arellano Villaseñor said they were going to look to ensure safety features such as an on-site lifeguard. “In this case a lack of lifeguard is what concerns us, since unfortunately, there is already a precedent of another similar situation, so they will be required to have a lifeguard.”

The boy was rushed to hospital Sunday but died an hour after being admitted.

On Sunday evening, an ambulance rushed an unconsciousness 9 year old boy to hospital around 6:00 p.m. after drowning in the hotel pool. He died in hospital about an hour after being admitted. On May 24, another child also died by drowning in that same hotel pool.
