CFE makes central island power repair after 12 hour outage

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Central island residents of Isla Mujeres are finally with power again after a 12-hour outage. Personnel from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) made an appearance on the island Saturday after reports of a power failure during the night.

Residents in central La Gloria reported a blown transformer around 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning. It wasn’t until around 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon that the lack-of-power problem was officially resolved.

A crew from the state-owned company showed up around 2:00 p.m. Saturday to begin replacing the transformer that blew during the night. The crew spent approximately an hour-and-a-half in the residential area making the repair.

Material required to make the repair was shipped to the island from Cancun. Photo: June 1, 2024.
The material required to replace the damaged transformer was brought over from mainland Cancun. The cause for the transformer blow has been blamed on an electrical overload due to high demand on aged lines.
