Cancun, Q.R. — An alleged member of La Linea Cartel from Chihuahua was arrested in Cancun. On Tuesday, the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office announced the Monday arrest of Juan Manuel G from the Cancun International Airport “where he was traveling trying to avoid capture.”
The Office said that Juan Manuel G, aka el Johnny, is believed to be a generator of violence in the northwest part of the state, having participated in the ambushed Ascensión-Juárez highway attack that killed police, an immigration officer and civilians two weeks ago.
He was arrested Monday on a warrant for sexual assault of a minor in Buenaventura, but is being investigated in connection with the April 15 attack on the Mexico highway near the U.S. border that left two state police officers, a Mexican immigration agent and three civilians dead after being shot to death inside vehicles the attackers later burned.
The Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office says La Linea Cartel operates in the municipalities of Bocoyna, Ricardo Flores Magón, Aldama as well as neighboring areas. La Linea Cartel was originally designed to be the executing unit branch of the Cártel de Juárez.
At the time of his arrest, he identified himself with false credentials including a driver’s license from the State of Chihuahua and an INE credential in the name of a different person. Authorities believe Juan Manuel G is considered a lieutenant of the criminal group.
He has since been returned to Chihuahua and admitted to Cereso No. 1 of Aquiles Serdán prison.
