Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun judge has sentenced an American woman to four years in prison for entering the country with an illegal firearm. Sorangel “O” was sentenced Monday after National Guard located the handgun in her luggage.
During a routine luggage X-ray in Terminal 4 of the Cancun International Airport, authorities saw the gun inside one of her bags. A physical inspection of the bag revealed the gun and ammuniation.
On Monday, a Cancun judge handed down the four year prison sentence to American traveler, Sorangel “O”.
In a brief statement, the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) reported that their office in the State of Quintana Roo, obtained from a judge, a conviction against Sorangel “O” for the crime of carrying a firearm without a license and possession of cartridges.
“According to the police report, elements of the National Guard, when carrying out prevention and surveillance inspections in Terminal 4 of the Cancun International Airport, detained a person of American nationality, since the X-ray machine detected among her belongings a firearm and cartridges.
“The woman sentenced Monday was seized with a pistol-type firearm with a magazine supplied with six cartridges.
“Due to these facts, the Federal Prosecutor offered the necessary evidence to obtain from the judge the conviction against Sorangel “O”, who was sentenced to four years in prison.”
