Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A 21-year-old Canadian man died Thursday evening after falling from a Riviera Maya hotel balcony. The young man, identified as L. Weavers, was with a friend when he is reported to have accidently slipped and fell.
His body was found in a grassy area below the balcony. Emergency services arrived at the Riviera Maya hotel shortly after 7:30 p.m. in response to reports of the fall. Forensics personnel from the State Attorney General’s office arrived to remove the body.
The young man is reported to have fallen from the top floor of the hotel. It is not clear how the fall happened. Civil Protection were also at the scene to investigate. Local authorities have not made a public comment regarding the Canadian man’s death.
The hotel is located approximately four kilometers north Playa del Carmen. It is the same hotel where, earlier this week, a palapa fire started on the top floor. Staff of the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda were able to put out the fire, but not before it burned a full length palapa structure on the floor below. There were no reports of injuries in the palapa fire.
