Authorities continue to investigate two Mayan homes destroyed by afternoon fire

José María Morelos, Q.R. — Two modest Mayan homes were destroyed by fire Monday afternoon after flames ripped through. Both side-by-side homes in the Guadalupe neighborhood of the town of José María Morelos burned.

Firemen located the homes on Primavera Street, noting they were both vacant at the time of the fire.

According to reports, a man who was passing by was the one who called the fire department after noticing a palapa roof smoking. Upon arrival, firefighters set about securing the area as the fire had already completely consumed the roofs and the interior of both homes.

Germán Pineda, the Municipal Director of JMM Firefighters said they were still investigating the cause of the original fire. He said they were also working to determine where the fire started, in which home first.

He commented that authorities are looking into several possible causes since neither of the homes had wiring for electricity. Pineda said neighbors reported seeing a child running from one of the houses just prior to the fire.
