Puerto Morelos hotel submits impact statement to build artificial reef

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — With an investment of more than 24 million peso, the Marina El Cid hotels at Puerto Morelos have submitted a request for the construction of an artificial reef and beach recovery project.

The request was submitted by Caribe Paradise before the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) with plans to build an artificial reef which would consist of four barriers and replace the functions of the Barrier Reef in the event of a hurricane.

The construction, if approved, would be approximately one kilometer from the Puerto Morelos National Park.

According to the Environmental Impact Statement, the project would be for the protection of the beach in front of both their hotels, where they also intend to replace three breakwaters and recover 10 meters of beach in a span of just over two years.
