Police seize car and identify driver alleged responsible for deadly Cozumel hit and run

Cozumel, Q.R. — Police have located the car believed responsible for the fatal hit and run of a Cozumel woman Monday. A private security camera in Colonia Altamar captured the moment the speeding car, which was traveling the wrong way down the avenue, slammed into a motorcycle carrying two people.

The across-the-street private camera captured the motorcycle being thrown into the air above the height of the car before it came crashing down onto the road. Both the man and woman were thrown from the bike also onto the road.

The driver of the car fled the scene by trying to hop the central median, but not before running over one of the hurt motorcyclists. The first attempt to clear the median did not work. The driver is seen reversing his car, again, over the motorcyclist laying on the road, before gunning it up and over the central median and into the rightful lane.

The person laying on the street that was run over at least twice was the female passenger. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver was rushed to Cozumel hospital in critical condition. According to a police update, he is stable.

The fatal hit and run happened early Monday morning on 30th Avenue and 25th Street South. On Tuesday, island officers located the vehicle. The heavily damaged car was seized from inside a gated area of a private home in Colonia Altamar and towed to police facilities.

In a statement late Tuesday, the State Attorney General (FGE) reported on the finding and seizure of the private car.

In their report, they said police “seized the car involved in the traffic accident that occurred early Monday morning when a motorist ran over a man and a woman who were riding a motorcycle in the streets of this municipality in which the woman lost her life, while the man was injured and his health condition is reported as delicate, but stable.

“It is announced that the male person responsible for this accident, who fled the scene, has already been identified, so he will soon be required to answer for the aforementioned criminal acts,” they said.

According to local reports, the driver of the Corolla alleged responsible for the accident has been identified as Amado “E”, a Cozumel gas station attendant. Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the suspect they said they have identified.
