Pickup totaled in Riviera Maya dump truck accident

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Four people were left injured after the pickup truck they were riding in slammed into the side of a dump truck. The accident happened Saturday morning on a section of Riviera Maya federal highway south of Playa del Carmen.

According to available information, the driver of the industrial truck failed to see the private vehicle while taking a turn off the main highway. The two trucks collided, leaving the pickup as a write-off.

The driver of the pickup hit the side of the dump truck at highway speed, collapsing the entire front end. Four people from inside the private truck were transferred to hospital with serious injuries, but not before being cut free of the wreckage by Playa del Carmen firemen.

The dump truck suffered a damaged side bumper.

Traffic was backed up for kilometers in the heat of the morning due to the location of the accident. National Guard allowed vehicles to pass beside the accident scene in an attempt to keep traffic flowing. Other National Guard personnel were stationed along the federal highway directing traffic past the emergency vehicles who arrived in response to the accident.
