Manhunt comes to an end: Cozumel police capture uncle in nephew stabbing death

Cozumel, Q.R. — An intense two day operation for the Cozumel man videoed stabbing his nephew to death has come to an end. On Wednesday, Municipal Police and Navy personnel located and captured the suspect from his jungle hideout.

The Seguridad Ciudadana of Cozumel has identified the now-detained as Ramón “A” also known as his alias “El Moncho”. According to a news release, police were lead to his location due to an ongoing investigation that included citizen assistance.

A search operation was implemented after clues as to his approximate whereabouts began to emerge. On Wednesday, that operation paid off. In their briefing, the Seguridad Ciudadana of Cozumel said Ramón “A” did not go quietly. His arrest was made after an officer shot him in the buttocks when he tried to attack them with a machete.

“At the time of his arrest, El Moncho tried to flee and attacked the officers with a machete. Faced with this situation, an agent used his service weapon to neutralize him, wounding him in one of his buttocks.

“El Moncho was arrested and taken to a hospital to receive medical attention. A security guard was placed on site to ensure his surveillance,” Cozumel police reported.

Ramón “A” was captured on a private security camera Sunday night stabbing his nephew to death on a public street in Colonia CTM. After the attack he fled on a motorcycle.

The 21-year-old stabbing victim, José Alberto “N”, was rushed to hospital where he died from more than a dozen stab wounds.

“The Municipal Police, together with the Secretary of the Navy and elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Quintana Roo, managed to capture the alleged murderer of a person thanks to intelligence work and citizen collaboration.

“The authorities received clues about the whereabouts of the individual accused of the murder of his nephew. In response, a search operation was organized that ended successfully. The alleged culprit was located in the vicinity of the transversal highway at kilometer 13 near an annex.

“This positive result is due to the coordinated work between local authorities and the valuable citizen participation through reports and complaints, which allowed for a rapid response,” the Seguridad Ciudadana of Cozumel said.

Police have not provided a possible motive into the deadly attack nor have they announced official charges.
