Harbor Master’s Office starts investigation into two-boat collision in Cozumel waters

Cozumel, Q.R. — One person was treated for minor injuries after two tourist vessels collided. Both boats crashed into one another in waters off the island of Cozumel Tuesday afternoon.

Both tourist vessels suffered damage in the at-sea crash. According to preliminary information, one of the boats was crossing the path of a second and unable to avoid it.

Both boats with all of their passengers, were able to reach shore without incident. The collision happened around 2:00 p.m. approximately 50 meters from the shore. One boat named Yensy left the Aldora dock and was sailing for the reefs south of the island with eight tourists and two crew at the time.

Their have been allegations that one of the boat’s captains was distracted by his cell phone and failed to see the second vessel in time. Port Captain Victor Lozano from the Cozumel Harbor Master’s Office says they are investigating the events to determine responsibilities.
