Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Two grass-topped homes went up in flames late Thursday in the Mayan community of Uh May. Emergency 9-1-1 dispatched Felipe Carrillo Puerto firemen to the scene after reports of the fires.
Firefighters came from the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, approximately 20 kilometers from the community of Uh May, in response to the late night reports.
Despite efforts to save them, both homes were consumed. According to resident witnesses, the fires were intentionally started in one of the buildings by someone who ran to the second building and also set it ablaze.
The two homes are reported to be 150 meters apart. The person seen lighting them on fire ran from the area before authorities arrived. While the walls are concrete, the palapa roofs and all the contents inside the homes were destroyed.
There were no injuries reported. Felipe Carrillo Puerto are treating both fires as possible arson. A motive for the intentionally set fires has not been provided.
