Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — UPDATED: Emergency services had a section of Puerto Morelos highway shut Wednesday due to a single vehicle accident. The male driver of a compact car skewered his vehicle with a metal highway guardrail near the entrance to the Ruta de los Cenotes.
The single vehicle accident happened around 5:00 p.m. that left traffic slowed in the area. Passing motorists phoned 9-1-1 after seeing the skewered car and its bleeding driver laying on the highway.
The male driver was located by emergency services laying on the road with his right leg nearly severed by the guardrail. He was transferred to hospital in critical condition.
The impact against the guardrail severed the base of the driver’s seat, ejecting both the seat and driver from the car. The seat and driver were found on the pavement several meters behind the skewered vehicle.
The Puerto Morelos Fire Department reported only briefly on the afternoon accident. “Caution, vehicle accident reported on federal highway 307, at kilometer 319, as a reference to the entrance to the cenote route, emergency services on the way,” Bomberos Puerto Morelos posted.
Green Angels arrived to help control traffic while medical personnel from the Puerto Morelos fire department attended to the scene.
According to early information, the man was attempting to avoid a passing car when he accidently swerved into the metal guardrail to avoid being hit. He had just left Puerto Morelos and was heading to Cancun at the time of the accident.
