Cozumel, Q.R. — A plane that crashed into the sea off the island of Cozumel has been recovered. A group of divers began the surfacing task early Sunday. Once everything was in place, it took around an hour to refloat the plane.
By around 3:00 p.m., the plane had been brought to the surface and moved near the Quinta Maya dock where it waited for a tow truck. The plane has since been moved to the Cozumel International Airport where federal officials will begin an inspection to reveal the official cause of the crash.
On Saturday, the small air taxi had left the Playa del Carmen airfield bound for Cozumel when the plane took a nose dive into the sea. The accident happened less than 400 meters from the island’s landing strip.
The small plane landed in the sea Saturday near where a group of military divers were participating in an exercise. They rushed out and were able to pull the pilot from the plane alive.
