Cozumel, Q.R. — The body of a Cozumel boat passenger who fell into the sea unnoticed has been recovered. On Sunday night, the tourist boat was returning from a late afternoon tour of El Cielo when crew noticed a missing passenger.
The man, a Mexican national, is reported to have fallen into the sea unnoticed. Crew began a search for the overboard passenger in dark waters, eventually arriving at the Fonatur Marina dock with the deceased’s body on board.
According to Cozumel media, the tourist boat involved is not equipped with night lights. By the time the crew noticed the man missing, he had already drowned since the search was delayed by the lack of lighting for nighttime searches.
Cozumel nautical operators have commented on the accident, noting that many of these night tours involve excessive drinking and that tourists do not always wear life jackets.
Forensic Medical Services (Semefo) arrived at the Cozumel Marina shortly after 10:00 p.m. Sunday to remove the body. The drowned man was reportedly not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident.
