Apiqroo looking to install high tech security cameras in Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos terminals

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Comprehensive Port Authority (Apiqroo) is conducting a study to install security cameras in more of their terminals. This year, Apiqroo says they are hoping to add Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos to the list.

Vagner Elbiorn Vega, the Director of Apiqroo (Administración Portuaria Integral), says the high tech cameras will have facial recognition features as well as license plate readers like the cameras installed at the Cozumel ferry terminal.

The goal is for Quintana Roo’s maritime terminals under Apiqroo management to be the most secure in the country. This year, the maritime terminals of Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos are expected to have this security system.

“They are facial recognition cameras and license plate reader cameras, excellent quality cameras that are connected to the C5. We started in Cozumel and we will replicate them in absolutely all the ports under the Port Authority’s control which include Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Punta Sam and Puerto Juárez,” he said.

He says the installed cameras at the ferry terminal of Cozumel was a 4 million peso investment. He says the idea is to install the same system in at least two more ports this year.

The chosen ports will be Isla Mujeres and Puerto Morelos due to their high number of passengers and cargo in the case of Puerto Morelos.

“When visitors arrive and see the system they feel very safe. It’s not just the cameras. We have the full support of the federation with surveillance from National Guard, the Navy, state and municipal police. We have security arches and we also have canines. We truly strive to have secure terminals throughout the state,” he explained.

The cutting-edge technology will be linked to the C5 in Cancun from where constant monitoring is carried out to guarantee the surveillance of the maritime terminals.
