Authorities seize 200 kilos of fireworks from back of Cozumel pickup

Cozumel, Q.R. — Civil Protection personnel of Cozumel seized approximately 200 kilos of fireworks from a private vehicle Thursday. Authorities took the bags of fireworks after the driver of the pickup was found in noncompliance.

Civil Protection seized the items after a traffic stop by island police. The Director of Civil Protection, Héctor Mac Marín, reported that Cozumel police stopped a locally plated vehicle that was traveling in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood. In the bed of the truck, police located nearly 200 kilos of fireworks meant for retail.

Mac Marín indicated that the driver of the vehicle was made available to the National Guard and will later be presented to federal authorities since the commercialization of these products is a federal crime.

He noted that this was the first major seizure of pyrotechnics this season. Mac Marin said that armed forces personnel will be responsible for its eventual destruction. The seizure comes a day after a home was completely destroyed in Playa del Carmen from kids playing with fireworks.
