Prosecutors in David Balam case granted additional month

Tulum, Q.R. — The Special Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Corruption has been granted an additional month to gather evidence against David Balam, the former mayor of Tulum.

The investigative extension was granted to the prosecutor’s office Monday. Balam is being investigated for property loss in excess of 114 million peso during his administrative term as municipal head of Tulum, for which he was found linked on October 30, 2019.

The former official is accused of the irregular award of service provision contracts with 29 companies without any support or justification. During their investigations, the Superior State Audit detected patrimonial damage estimated at more than 114.1 million peso for which it considered the atypical activity violated the regulations of acquisitions at the municipal and state level.
