Presidential decree claims 10 Riviera Maya properties for section 5

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Through a decree, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has declared 137,622.4 square meters of land as “public utility” for Maya Train use. The land corresponds to 10 privately owned properties in the municipality of Solidaridad.

They are being earmarked for use for section 5 of the Maya Train.

“The temporary occupation of 137,622.43 square meters is decreed, corresponding to 10 privately owned properties,” the decree declares.

“The Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development proceeds to the immediate occupation of the assets that are the subject of this decree. The interposition of any means of defense does not suspend the designated occupation,” said the federal government.

According to the publication, “Within ten business days following the notification of this decree, the interested parties may resort to judicial proceedings, with the sole purpose of disputing the amount of compensation but not the use of the land for the Maya Train”.

The decree was published the day after a March 2 hearing between between Fonatur and Camino del Sol in Merida. The company won a suspension of work on section 5 after claiming that Maya Train workers illegally accessed the land and began felling trees without authorization.

The official outcome of that March 2 hearing has not been announced.
