Mahahual, Q.R. — Mahahual officials held a manual beach cleaning day to remove washed up sargassum from their shores. The clean was made by personnel from Secretary of Labor and Social Welfare of the State (STyPS) in coordination with the Othón P. Blanco City Council.
Flor Ruiz Cosio who heads the STyPS explained that in coordination with the City Council, equipment and machinery required to remove the sargassum from Mahahual beaches was delivered.
Ruiz Cosio, in the company of personnel from the STyPS, IGECE, AGEPRO, DIF and IDEFIN, carried out the beachfront clean to help remove the seaweed from specific areas that have been affected by its arrival.
Cosio said that “In this, we are not alone. We always have the accompaniment and support of the Government of Mexico through the Secretary of the Navy and of the municipal governments who have been working very actively and permanently on this issue, including from the private sector and establishments.”
In February, Governor Mara Lezama announced the early installation of anti-sargassum barriers off the coast of Mahahual. At the time, the Governor said “There will be 1,400 meters of barrier to help prevent the sargassum from reaching the beach. 1,100 meters of barrier will be placed in the northern part and 300 meters in the southern part,” however, not all of the barrier was placed.
Earlier this month, Mahahual businesses notified Semar, who is in charge of placing the anti-sargassum barriers, that what was installed had been misplaced which has resulted in sargassum reaches beaches.
