Cancun, Q.R. — The state’s Honorary Consul to Russia has announced her resignation. Armina Wolpert says she can no longer represent Russia since she does not share the government’s principals and values.
“Wednesday night I decided to resign from the position of Honorary Consul of Russia in Quintana Roo for not being able to represent the country without sharing the principles and values of its government. I will miss working with the wonderful people at the Embassy,” she posted Thursday morning.
Wolpert resigned from her position due to the situation between Russia and Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he would take military action on Ukraine. In response, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard said Mexico strongly condemns the invasion.
“We are very clear that it is an invasion with a scale that practically covers the entire territory of Ukraine,” he said Thursday.
He said that for historical reasons, Mexico is obliged to condemn attacks and invasions, since Mexico has been the victim of this type of arbitrariness in the past.
In a video message, he said that the order of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is that Mexico’s position is to demand the cessation of military operations and that immediate action be taken to protect the civilian population.
