Former mayor of Playa del Carmen denied release of precautionary detention

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The former mayor of Playa del Carmen, Mauricio José Góngora Escalante, will remain behind bars after a judge denied his request for a change in his precautionary detention.

The denial came after a judge deemed him a flight risk. He will remain imprisoned even though lawyers argued that he suffers from Type 2 diabetes, asthma and hypertension. The former head of the municipality of Solidaridad has been charged with the diversion of resources in excess 748 million peso.

Mauricio Góngora continues to be held on charges of embezzlement against the municipality.
