Former Borge treasurer arrested, released due to Amparo

Mérida Yucatán — The former Treasurer and Secretary of Finance for the state of Quintana Roo was arrested in Mérida Tuesday night. Reports say José Alejandro Marrufo Roldán, the former Treasurer and Secretary of Finance during the Borge administration, was taken into custody and transferred to the Social Reintegration Center (CERESO) in Chetumal at dawn Wednesday.

Marrufo Roldán was wanted on charges of embezzlement and irregular performance during his time as Quintana Roo treasurer. In 2018, an arrest warrant was issued against him, however, he was successful in being granted an Amparo on June 11 of this year.

After his Tuesday arrest in Merida, a judge deemed his detainment illegal due to this existing Amparo.

“There was already an Amparo granted that ordered the cancellation of that arrest warrant. Then from the control of detention it was decreed illegal,” said his lawyer.

Marrufo Roldán has since been released. His passport and travel visa, however, have been withheld. Now that authorities have located him, he will be required to answer investigative questions.
