Riviera Maya, Q.R. — While the remaining sections of the Maya Train are still scheduled for a February inauguration, an inauguration for the entire project won’t be until June.
In a Friday interview from Calakmul, Campeche, President López Obrador told reporters that the upcoming elections are the reason for the setback.
Authorities had initially planned to inaugurate the entire Tren Maya project at the end of February with the opening of the remaining sections, however, political matters will see that event delayed.
López Obrador says instead of a grand February 29 inauguration, it will be held sometime after the June 2 elections.
“It is going to happen in parts. On the 29th we are going to inaugurate Cancun to Playa del Carmen and we continue working. It is a very big project,” he said.
Regarding the full project inauguration, “I think in two more months,” he added saying that after February he cannot inaugurate due to the electoral process, “but once the elections are over (…) yes, yes, yes, we will be able to inaugurate.”
He specified that section 5 from Cancun to Playa del Carmen will still be inaugurated on February 29 as scheduled, however, he did not say if the February 29 date will also include the remaining sections 6 and 7, which would complete the entire Tren Maya circuit.
Earlier this week, the Government of Mexico opened a new online purchase system for Tren Maya ticket sales.
