Cancun, Q.R. — A single vehicle accident along Bonampak Avenue left blocks of Cancun residents without power. On Friday night, CFE personnel were called to make repairs after a vehicle knocked down a pole.
The incident happened in central Cancun around 10:00 p.m. when the driver of the car went out of control and hit the pole. Cancun Transit and Municipal Police were at the site of the crash in SM 9 at the intersection of Avenida Banco Chinchorro.
The 53 year old female driver was heading toward the Kaba-Colosio Road Distributor at the time of the accident.
According to initial reports, the woman suffered a broken right high heel shoe while driving, causing her to accelerate. She passed through a pedestrian crossing before slamming into the CFE power pole.
She was treated at the scene for injuries before being transferred to a Cancun hospital.
The entire area was left without electricity. Municipal Transit closed traffic on the affected section of Bonampak Avenue due to the fallen cables and the lack of traffic lights.
Traffic was diverted toward Tulum Avenue for more than an hour while a tow truck lifted the fallen pole and work crews cleared the area.
