Brigades make headway on smoky Tulum forest fire

Tulum, Q.R. –Civil Protection and the Forest Protection Brigade created a firebreak that allowed them to control a forest fire in Colonia Cristal. Smoke from the fire, which had been burning for several days, was affecting residents of Aldea Tulum.

Brigades began the task May 22, which gave them the break they needed to be able to start to extinguish the fire. Forest firefighters are working to have the fire completely extingished as soon as possible.

According to Conafor, there are currently 64 active forest fires burning across 14 of Mexico’s states that have consumed more than 20,500 hectares of land. The fires are being fought by 1,305 men and women. To date, 23 have been fully extinguished.
